Can social media predict future mental health problems?

This EENet Inqboard infographic provides a summary of the findings from a study looking at whether people’s everyday language contains sufficient information to predict the future occurrence of mental illness.

The researchers collected language samples from the social media website, Reddit, drawing on posts to discussion groups that focused on different kinds of mental illness (clinical subreddits), as well as on posts to discussion groups focusing on nonmental health topics (nonclinical subreddits).

The study, by Robert Thorstad and Phillip Wolff were published in the journal Behavior Research Methods in 2019.
