Eating disorders and the global pandemic: Crisis is opportunity

Hosted by Children's Healthcare Canada Mental Health Network.

Globally, Eating Disorder presentations have increased dramatically over the course of the COVID pandemic. The struggle to meet a surging demand for resources has shone a bright light on the pre-existing deficits in this critical area. Care for this population requires an interdisciplinary team of specialist providers who can rapidly attend to individuals with varying severity of illness; and whose skill set bridges medical and mental health needs.

In order to truly meet the health care needs of youth with Eating Disorders, systems can learn from this crisis and commit to a broader understanding of child health. Novel collaborations between service providers, departments and institutions will increase awareness, decrease stigma and create a more robust health care system for Eating Disorder patients and other vulnerable populations whose needs are not well met within our existing systems of care. Crisis is Opportunity.
