# Why SBIRT for Problem Gambling?
Numerous brief and full screens are able to reliably identify people experiencing greater gambling risk or harms.
The use of brief interventions for problem gambling has been shown to decrease:,
- gambling frequency
- gambling expenditure
- gambling harms
- associated distress.
Screening and brief interventions can be delivered in a wide range of settings and provide an opportunity to intervene with individuals who are not seeking treatment, to prevent or reduce the risk of harm associated with gambling.
SBIRT processes can be seen as the one component of a comprehensive treatment approach to identify people with gambling behaviours who need intervention. It is consistent with a stepped care approach, where the intensity of the intervention is matched to the level or risk of harm.
