# Why should gambling be a priority in community and healthcare settings?
It has been well established that people who struggle with unhealthy gambling behaviours frequently also have difficulties with addiction and mental health problems, including:
- Substance use disorders
- Mood disorders
- Anxiety disorders.
Research has also shown that people with problem gambling are more likely to seek treatment for their other concerns than for their gambling behaviours. Undetected problem gambling can in turn negatively impact a person’s engagement and response to supports and services.
Implementing an SBIRT protocol for problem gambling within your organization provides an opportunity to identify gambling-related harms that could go undetected and help inform a holistic treatment plan.
