Review Client’s Patterns

  • Ask permission to give feedback
  • Use non-judgemental language/tone

Review screening data and express concern for current patterns
“Now I’d like review the results of the questionnaire you filled out earlier and give you some feedback about your gambling. Would that be all right with you? Thank you for your openness in your answers, they are really helpful for us to better understand your gambling.”

Give Information/Feedback*

  • Highlight the connection between issues specific to the client and gambling (if appropriate)

Highlight connection between gambling behaviour and related consequences
“The screening results show that your current pattern of gambling puts you at moderate risk for developing what we call problem gambling. Problem gambling can lead to a wide range of consequences, financially, socially, and even physically.”

WARNING

*If screening results indicate that a client is at a moderate risk for problem gambling but the organization does not have the capacity to implement brief interventions, the provision of educational materials or referrals to treatment for gambling is recommended (see Referral to Treatment).
